Thanks to my dear friend Sofia and the Swedish postal service, I’ve finally got one of these posters in my hot little hands. In 1888 the Malmö Chocolate and Confectionary Factory was started by Emil Nissen and his family. The company was soon renamed Mazzetti and the manufacturers best known product became a cocoa powder called Ögoncacao (Cocoa Eyes).
In 1954 the company commissioned Swedish graphic designer Olle Eksell for one of his very first jobs – to refresh the existing Ögoncacao logo. His design went on to become one of the most recognizable icons in Sweden. In 1999 the iconic logo was used on the exhibition poster for a show of Eksell’s work at the Form Design Center in Malmö. Ever since, I’ve often spotted these monochrome eyes appearing in Scandinavian interiors.
