During our travels in South Africa, we were lucky to be invited to spend a few nights on the Bergrivier near the fishing town of Velddrif on the Western Cape. It’s a beautiful area dotted with pink salt lakes, a river full of bird life (including flamingos) and a small town centre. Our lovely new friends were incredible hosts, welcoming us into their cabin and treating us to a special trip.
Our days were spent in the sunshine; jumping off the pier and attempting to fish. We’d drive into town for bait, prepare long lunches and wave at the boats speeding past. In the evenings we were spoilt to incredible dinners over the braai while swapping stories, Windhoek beers in hand.
In the mornings the river was blanketed in a thick white fog before transforming into golden sunshine and a brilliant blue throughout the day. At sunset a pastel gradient streaked the sky and flocks of birds flew overhead, settling in the silhouetted gum trees. We walked around in awe, astonished at just how much it looked and felt exactly like an Australian landscape.
Special thanks to Pat, Rox, Simone, Micah, Nadia and Jason for introducing us to paradise.
